Auroral Kilometric Radiation -- the Electron Cyclotron Maser Paradigm

چکیده
Auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) is the paradigm of intense radio emission from planetary magnetospheres. Being close to electron gyro frequency and/or its lower harmonics, observation indicates non-thermal state source plasma. Emission produced when plasma enters a energetic excitation which results in deformation distribution function. Under certain conditions this leads "quasi-coherent" emission. It believed that weakly-relativistic electron-cyclotron-maser instability responsible for kind radiation. The electron cyclotron maser
The electron cyclotron maser (ECM) is based on a stimulated cyclotron emission process involving energetic electrons in gyrational motion. It constitutes a cornerstone of relativistic electronics, a discipline that has emerged from our understanding and utilization of relativistic effects for the generation of coherent radiation from free electrons. Over a span of four decades, the ECM has unde...
متن کاملBackward wave cyclotron-maser emission in the auroral magnetosphere.
In this Letter, we present theory and particle-in-cell simulations describing cyclotron radio emission from Earth's auroral region and similar phenomena in other astrophysical environments. In particular, we find that the radiation, generated by a down-going electron horseshoe distribution is due to a backward-wave cyclotron-maser emission process. The backward wave nature of the radiation cont...
متن کاملElectron-Cyclotron-Maser Observable Modes
We investigated wave amplification through the Electron-Cyclotron-Masermechanism. We calculated absorption and emission coefficients without any approximations, also taking into account absorption by the ambient thermal plasma. A power-law energy distribution for the fast electrons was used, as is indicated by X-ray and microwave observations. We developed a model for the saturation length and ...
متن کاملA simple model of the Auroral Kilometric Radiation visibility
Data collected with Polrad swept frequency analyzer during almost 2.5 years of Interball-2 mission are used to investigate the directivity properties of AKR observed in the Northern Hemisphere. In contrast with the previous, mostly statistical studies, single dynamic spectra have been analyzed. Simple modeling of AKR source visibility from the location of the observer makes possible to find app...
متن کامل3D PiC code investigations of Auroral Kilometric Radiation mechanisms
Efficient (~1%) electron cyclotron radio emissions are known to originate in the X mode from regions of locally depleted plasma in the Earths polar magnetosphere. These emissions are commonly referred to as the Auroral Kilometric Radiation (AKR). AKR occurs naturally in these polar regions where electrons are accelerated by electric fields into the increasing planetary magnetic dipole. Here con...
